Meditations on Becoming a Man

Background

  • What is the definition of masculinity?

  • What is toxic masculinity?

  • And what does it mean to be a man?

The young men of today are trying to make sense of these questions. Bolstered by the abundance of pressure from peers and online influencers like Andrew Tate, Clavicular, and Jordan Peterson (and many other figures within the powerful manosphere) young people are bombarded with a slew of definitions about what it means to be a man.

Popular influencers use fear, rage, and illusions of male eradication to pray on young men’s insecurities. They aim to provide the promise of a sense of manhood that is rooted in absolute power, unending control, financial success, and ultimate desirability to women. This “new” masculinity is a simply a 21st century rebranding of manhood from yesteryear. These limiting perspectives have young men struggling to love themselves, find meaningful connections, find professional success and fulfillment, and outlive well-established statistics of premature death.

Young men are struggling.

Sifting through the grifting and lifestyle nonsense can be difficult when algorithms are particularly powerful in creating an echo-chamber. Parents and loved ones, educators, guidance counselors, and coaches find it difficult to break through the noise that’s tanking young men’s mental health and keeping them trapped in masculine isolation.

I’m writing to offer a resource.

Meditations on Becoming a Man is my answer to these challenges. It’s born out of my desire to write directly to young men across ethnicities, and those who care for them, with insight and guidance designed to help them embrace their full humanity as complex human beings, not just glossy images on social media they are told they must aspire to.

This book offers an exploratory and affirming pathway for young men to explore manhood from holistic and healthful perspectives. There are insights and guidance all informed by the deep understanding of healthy psychological principles I bring to my clients as a mental health provider every day.
